Note : IT WAS a weekend full of surprises when the 63rd season University Athletic Association of the Philippines opened shop in two separate venues. First, the glamour league's television coverage, now handled by giant network ABS-CBN, almost got stopped by a court injunction filed by former broadcast holder Silverstar Sports before its owner Louie Kierulf agreed to set things aside for the meantime for the sake of public interest. Second, it was the rookie coaches that hugged the spotlight. But more importantly, the biggest surprise was unveiled by defending champion De La Salle University. Expected by critics not to figure in the title hunt this year because of the loss of its key starters to the PBA, the Green Archers proved their skeptics wrong by lowering the boom on arch-rival Ateneo de Manila, 94-70, at the full-house Araneta Coliseum on opening day last July 15. Led by the hot hands of Renren Ritualo (23 points) and rookie guard Mike Cortez (14 points and 10 assists), the Archers blew out the Eagles with a 27-8 second half blast to overturn a 39-46 halftime deficit while also forcing the Loyola-based dribblers to turn the ball over 17 times.

Champion : De La Salle University
Runner-Up : Far Eastern University
