DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University pulled away from the pack in the women's division with a dominant 3.5-0.5 victory over De La Salle University in Round 5 of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Chess Tournament on Sunday at Adamson Gym.
The Lady Tamaraws now lead the standings with eight match points, holding a superior tiebreaker in total points scored over second-placed La Salle, who trails with six match points.
On Board 1, Woman National Master (WNM) Mhage Sebastian (4/4) showcased a brilliant combination of tactical moves in a closed position, forcing WNM Francois Magpily (2.5/4) to resign after 42 moves in a Sicilian Defense.
WNM Vic Glysen Derotas (4/4) followed with a grueling 80-move victory over Arena Grandmaster Sara Olendo (1/4) on Board 3. Meanwhile, Francheska Largo (2/2) capitalized on a 35th-move blunder by Rinoa Sadey (3/4) in time pressure to secure FEU’s third point.
La Salle’s Checy Telesforo (1.5/3) prevented a shutout, holding Samantha Umayan (1.5/2) to a draw on Board 4.
Leading UST’s charge was FIDE Master (FM) Christian Daluz (4/4), who sacrificed his bishop for a powerful passed pawn, securing a decisive endgame victory over Joshua Roque (0.5/4) on Board 1.
On Board 2, UST’s Chester Reyes (1/2) triumphed in a rook endgame against Arena International Master Alfonso Olendo (0/3).
Meanwhile, Jan Clifford Labog (2/3) and team captain Melito Ocsan Jr. (2.5/3) defeated John Rocel Simon (1/4) and Dustin Herrero (1/3) on Boards 3 and 4, respectively.
UP remained in contention with a 3-1 win over FEU, improving to six match points.
Arena International Master Cyrus Francisco (2.5/4), Roderenz Adra (2.5/4), and Arena Grandmaster Io Aristle Calica (3/4) all secured wins over FM John Merill Jacutina (2.5/4), FM Jeth Morado (1/3), and Christian Olaybal (1/2) on Boards 2, 3, and 4.
FM Mark Bacojo (3/4) provided the only victory for FEU, handing FM Stephen Pangilinan (3/4) his first loss of the tournament on Board 1.
In other women’s division matches, National University continued its rise with a commanding 3-1 win over UP, closing in on the second spot.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated as Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Allaney Doroy (3/4) and Natasja Balabbo (3/4) won on Boards 1 and 4, defeating Precious Ferrer (0/4) and Sofia Alcala (0/1), respectively.
Yana De Vera (1/3) and Queen Rose Pamplona (1.5/3) drew their matches with Jallen Agra (2.5/5) and Raiza Locmayoan (1.5/3) on Boards 2 and 3, sealing a near-perfect result for NU.
Ateneo rose to solo fourth place in the women’s division after a 2-2 draw against UST.
Ma. Elayza Villa (3.5/5) extended her undefeated streak with a win over Precious Yecla (2/4) on Board 2.
Meanwhile, Kristine Flores (1.5/4) and Lexie Hernandez (4.5/5) settled for draws with UST’s Josemier Panol (2.5/4) and Christine Tabungar (0.5/2) on Boards 1 and 3.
Princes Oncita (2/2) remained perfect, clinching her second straight win for UST by defeating Alphecca Gonzales (1.5/3) on Board 4.
In men's division action, La Salle edged archrival Ateneo 2.5-1.5, moving up to third in the standings.
Angele Biete (3.5/4) and Daniel John Lemi (2.5/4) delivered victories for the Green Woodpushers, defeating Romeo Canino (1/4) and Christopher Kis-ing (2/4) on Boards 2 and 3, respectively.
Kris Olvido (1/2) sealed La Salle’s win with a draw against Ateneo’s Knarf Batislaong (2/4), while Paul Matthew Llanillo (1/4) claimed Ateneo’s sole victory by outclassing Cyril Telesforo (1/4) on the top board. Round 5 of the men's tournament is set for Sunday, while the women's division will continue with Round 6 on Saturday.
On the other hand, Far Eastern University-Diliman dominated the competition, securing identical shutout victories to maintain top spot in both the boys' and girls' divisions at the conclusion of Round 4 of the UAAP Season 87 Chess Tournament on Sunday at the Adamson gym.
Before taking a bye in the next round, FEU-D ensured a clean sweep of their first-round matches in both divisions.
The Baby Tamaraws blanked Adamson University 4-0, while the girls' team recorded a similar 4-0 victory over De La Salle-Zobel.
On Board 1, Oscar Cantela (3.5/4) bolstered his gold medal prospects, remaining undefeated after defeating Adamson’s Allan Rafael Dolfo (1/3).
Fellow Baby Tamaraw Jerish John Velarde (3.5/4) maintained his Board 2 lead with a win over Raemund Bandejas (0.5/2).
Lemuel Jay Adena (3/3) and Arena Candidate Master Joemel Narzabal (2/2) completed FEU-D’s Round 4 sweep with victories over Jonver Acosta (1/3) and Jian Bautista (1/3) on Boards 3 and 4, respectively.
The Lady Baby Tamaraws had a similar performance.
Kate Ordizo (3.5/4) and Woman FIDE Master Ruelle Canino (4/4) defeated La Salle's Joedi Costes (0/2) and Sarah Cabodil (0/2) on Boards 1 and 2, respectively.
On Board 3, April Joy Carlos (4/4) continued her perfect run, winning against Francesca Icay (0/2), while Franiel Magpily (1/2) triumphed over Jeslyn Santos (0/3) on Board 4.
In another girls' division match, University of Santo Tomas claimed its second straight victory with a 3.5-0.5 win over Adamson, securing solo second place.
Trina Temple (3/3) led UST with a flawless record, defeating the previously unbeaten Ma. Christina Samarita (2/3) on Board 4. Nathalie Liscano (2/2) also maintained her winning streak, overcoming Florence Isabedra (1/3) on Board 3.
Iana Sotaridona (2/3) added another point for UST with her win against Christen Reyes (1/2) on Board 2, while Daren dela Cruz (1/3) settled for a draw with ADU’s Lira Placer (1.5/3) on Board 1.
In the boys' division, UST also secured solo second place with a dominant 3.5-0.5 victory over De La Salle-Zobel.
Jian Rivera (2.5/3), Jude Dableo (1/2), and Marlon Balbaboco Jr. (1/1) each secured wins on Boards 2, 3, and 4, respectively, against James Karl Vinluan (0/3), Nathan Navarro (0/3), and Santino Edralin (0/1), rounding off UST's commanding performance in Round 4.
Tyrhone Tabernilla (1.5/3) was the only La Salle player to earn points, drawing with Karlycris Clarito Jr. (1.5/3) on Board 1.
Round 5 for both the boys' and girls' divisions will resume on Sunday, October 27.
