Note : TITLE-HUNGRY Jose Rizal University (JRU) began its hunt of putting an end to its 29-year title drought with a thunderbolt-like 55-54 victory over San Sebastian College (SBC) to kick off hostilities at the 77th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's basketball tournament held at the Araneta Coliseum. University of Perpetual Help Rizal also sent a message of pursuing its first-ever title in the country's oldest amateur league when it dumped off Mapua Institute of Technology with a convincing 61-52 victory in the second match of a four-game bill. Defending champion College of Saint Benilde also maked it sure that the Blazers kicked off on the right track of its back-to-back quest with a hard-earned 71-65 victory over the former two-time consecutive champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran. A one-hour program choreographed by Bobby Ongkiko and cast with a total of 80 cheerleaders from the eight member schools ushered the opening ceremony that has portrayed the league's theme this year of "Revitalizing the Heritage of Sports."
