After Far Eastern University clinched the title in the women's division in the previous round, it was University of Santo Tomas' turn to seal the deal, annexing the men's division plum with a 3.5-0.5 thrashing of Adamson University in the penultimate round of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Chess Tournament at the Adamson Gym on Saturday.

The Tiger woodpushers sealed a fourth straight championship with eight wins against a single loss for 16 match points, two wins ahead of second-ranked University of the Philippines who has 12 match points.

FIDE Master Christian Daluz (8.5/9) once again led the way in Round 11 as he continued with his immaculate run, achieving an impressive eighth win in nine rounds as he forced ADU's John Frederick Sunga (0/6) to resign after the 40th move that rendered that latter without a queen in the impending sequence of moves.

On Board 2, Chester Reyes (6/7) recorded his sixth straight win by emerging triumphant over Vince Arellano (1/6) after 53 moves of a rook endgame while fellow Tiger Lee Roi Palma (3/4) defeated Alfonso Olendo (0/6) on Board 3 in less than 20 moves with an overwhelming kingside attack.

Jan Clifford Labog (3.5/5) finalized the scoreline with a draw on Board 4 against ADU's Joshua Roque (2/7).

On the distaff side, Far Eastern University moved just a win away from completing an undefeated season by posting a 3.5-0.5 domination of UST in the penultimate round.

The newly-minted back-to-back champions banked on Woman National Master Mhage Sebastian (7.5/11) endgame genius as she outmaneuvered Josemier Panol (5.5/10) in 59 moves of a pawn endgame.

Franchesca Largo (6/8) bounced back from a Round 12 loss with a masterful performance in panic time against UST's Rohanish Buto (1.5/8) to take the win on Board 3 while Rhea Canino (1.5/2) returned from a nine-round absence by earning a point over Christine Tabungar (1/6) on Board 4.

Woman National Master Vic Glysen Derotas (9.5/11) completed the romp with a draw against Precious Yecla (5.5/11) on Board 2.

Meanwhile, De La Salle University snapped a two-round slide by achieving a much-needed 3.5-0.5 win over National University to leapfrog its victims for the second spot entering the final round.

La Salle's Sara Olendo (4/10), Rinoa Sadey (6.5/11), and Checy Telesforo (5.5/9) each scored a win over Queen Rose Pamplona (3.5/8), Natasja Balabbo (7/10), and Princess Ballete (2.5/5), respectively, as Woman National Master Francois Magpily (7/11) settled for a draw with NU's Woman FIDE Master Allaney Doroy (5.5/10).

University of the Philippines also secured at least a third-place finish after holding FEU to a 2-2 split in the men's division.

Cyrus Francisco (4.5/9) delivered UP's lone win in Round 9 after toppling FIDE Master John Merill Jacutina (4/8) as Roderenz Adra (5.5/9) and Io Aristotle Calica (6.5/9) finished with draws against FIDE Master Jeth Romy Morado (1.5/4) and Christian Olaybal (2/5), respectively.

FIDE Master Mark Bacojo (6.5/8) asserted his mastery of UP's FIDE Master Stephen Pangilinan (5/9) with a victory on the top board to complete the final scoreline.

La Salle also bagged a victory in the men's division after taking down archrival Ateneo de Manila University, 2.5-1.5, to dispute the last podium spot with FEU in their final round showdown.

Angele Biete (6/8) and Daniel John Lemi (6/9) powered the Archers to a pair of victories over Romeo Canino (3/8) and Knarf Batislaong (3/9) as Jester Sistoza (3/5) ensured La Salle's triumphant Round 9 with a draw against Christopher Kis-ing (3.5/9).

Cyril Telesforo (3/9) was the lone fatality for La Salle as he fell to Paul Matthew Llanillo (3/9) on the top board.

In the other women's division match, UP concluded its Season 87 campaign on a positive note with a 3-1 walloping of Adamson.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University - Diliman, which already sealed the titles in both divisions as early as Round 8, concluded its campaign with identical 4-0 wins in the boys' and girls' divisions in the penultimate round of the UAAP Season 87 High School Chess Tournament on Saturday at the Adamson Gym.

The Baby Tamaraws scored another 4-0 shutout victory over Adamson University spearheaded by Oscar Cantela (7/8) on the top board who scored his seventh point against Charles Candor (0/1).

Jersey John Velarde (7.5/8) also finished undefeated in eight games, as he forced resignation on Allan Dolfo (3/7) after the 32nd move courtesy of two unstoppable passed pawns while Joemel Narzabal (3/3) flexed his might against ADU's Raemund Bandejas (0.5/3) to take the win after 49 moves of a knight endgame on Board 3.

Arena FIDE Master Ritchie Abeleda (2/2) completed FEU-D's flawless victory by defeating Jonver Acosta (2.5/7) on Board 4.

In the girls' division, Woman FIDE Master Ruelle Canino (8/8) went perfect all-season-long as she drubbed Joedi Costes (0/4) on the topboard while Franiel Magpily (4/5) delivered a 56-move checkmate on ADU's Mariel Solis (0/5) to lead a 4-0 domination of De La Salle Zobel.

Ann Beatrice Bombales (2/3) and Lyn Getubig (2/3) concluded the match-up with a pair of victories over Francesca Icay (0/5) and Jeslyn Santos (0/6) on Board 3 and Board 4, respectively.
