The sad plight of Bokio Lauchengco

Federico Lauchengco is perhaps the most talked about amateur cager of the year.
The sweetshooting Lauchengco signed a three-year contract with San Miquel last
December 2, 1982, And this started everything. There are three factors that
are hindering Bokyo's exit from the amateur ranks, Firstly, his contract with
San Miguel would only be valid upon his release by the BAP. Secondly, many say
that Bokyo's mother team, Crispa, might not allow him to play for San Miguel,
Lauchengco was a member of the multi-titled Paul Jordan quintet, the amateur
team of Crispa. And lastly, the PBA Board of Governors voted to adopt the pool
system. This means that all contracts involving amateurs turning pro, signed
prior to the decision, are rescinded. Bokyo is optimistic that he'll be able to
play for San Miguel come March. The only major problem of course, is how to secure
his release rom the BAP. But by simply looking at Bokyo's bio-data, it's plain to
see that Lauchengco has all the qualifications that would make him eligible for
the pro league. Federico Lauchengco is already 26 and has been a member of seven
national squads. The BAP requires a player to be 'patriotic' at least twice or
to be above 24 before being released.
