ROBERT JAMES "ROB" JOHNSON
Sept. 25, 1979 California, USA 6-0, guard

THE Fil-Am guard came out of nowhere to grab a spot at Ginebra and become an instant fan favorite on the league's most popular team. Drafted in the third round at 22nd overall after a brief stint in the PBL, the wide-bodied point guard played in 20 games as a third-stringer in the backcourt and endeared himself to the fans with his hustle, enthusiasm and colorful ways on the floor. But at season's end he changed stripes from Ginebra red to Purefoods blue. A third-round pick in the 2003 Rookie pool, he pulled off a big surprise two years ago when he bagged a roster spot in the Ginebra rotation. It turned out the well-built guard wasn't through yet creating stir in the league. The season saw him spend time with both Purefoods and Alaska, although it was with the Aces that the former De La Salle reserve stuck out for the remainder of the campaign. Even surprising was the kind of numbers he churned out as a third-stringer Ace, averaging 3.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in 35 games.
