1. Remembering NCC Days - Hector 'The Director' Calma

At five feet and nine inches, it looked at the outset as if Hector Calma would have
to do hand stands at halftime to attract some attention in the seventh Asian Youth
basketball championships, a tournament expected to feature six feet and above in
the limelight. But surprisingly, and to the delight of basketball buffs who refuse
to go all the way with the old saw that in basketball height is might, the onetime
backcourt basketball player from Singalong, Manila, has turned out to be one of the
more eye-popping performers of the Philippine team. And to top it all, a stirring
accolade from Ron Jacobs, the American coach of the Philippine team, that in his book,
"the best player" in the boys division of the 16-nation tournament which ended last Sunday is Calma.
Coming from Jacobs, who is as much as astute observer of what makes a player stand out
as he is an exacting taskmaster, that sounds like nothing less than a tribute to end all tributes.
