PBA Opening 1988
Date : March 20, 1988
Location : University of Life Theater and Recreational Arena (ULTRA) in Pasig
It was a night of hail and farewell, that old glitz and a bit of new hoopla, a reminder that this is the year of the dragon and the season. of the unexpected when the Philippine Basketball Association raised the curtains on the 14th edition of its annual floor show at the Ultra arena in Pasig. It was also a night when sportscaster Joe Cantada, acting as emcee of the more than an hour-long inaugural rites, was moved to sing a song. The song was "My Way" and Joe, who has a rich baritone, sang it in honor of William (Bogs) Adornado, the league's first three-time Most Valuable Player awardee, who upon his announcement of his retirement a fortnight ago, was being honored by the PBA for his unforgettable contribution to the growth and popularity of the pro league.

In keeping with the sign under which the PBA's 14th season fell, the opening cere- monies opened with a dragon dance performed by the Kwang Han Athletic Club dancers from Chinatown. The national anthem, on the one hand, was sung by the Children's Choir of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Leading the parade of teams was the Shell Helix Oilers whose muses were a pair of eye-poppers Misses Ana Abiera and Monica Herrera. The other muses were Asia's fastest woman, Lydia de Vega, for Alaska Milk; Monina Tan for Ginebra San Miguel; beauty queen and now showbiz star Alice Dixson for Great Taste Coffee; Rowena Martin for San Miguel Beer, and Tweety de Leon and Child superstar Aiza Seguerra for new league member Purefoods. As expected, the muse who stole the show was little Miss Seguerra who, in keeping with the sporting nature of the occasion, showed up with a head band and a wrist band.
