I Remember Ron Jacobs a foreign coach who put the Filipinos back in the World map back in the 80's
1. I Remember Ron Jacobs a foreign coach who put the Filipinos back in the World map back in the 80's
National coach Ron Jacobs planed in from Taipei last week to a hero's welcome. His drooping eyebags
belied the strain that went with the Philippines' victory at the Jones Cup. Jacobs was not only
physically exhausted but also drained of emotion. He was almost ready to collapse from the tension
that started with the nationals' campaign at the world clubs championships in Spain. Now Jacobs was home.
And so were his indefatigable charges, their heads held high. The team, carrying the colors of
San Miguel Corp., had made history in Spain and Taipei. International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA)
secretary- general Borislav Stankovic followed the Filipinos' exploits from Gerona to Taipei,
marveling at their discipline and will to win. Twice, Stankovic broke out in applause during
San Miguel's losing effort against Cibona at Gerona not to cheer for his Yugoslavian compatriots
but to show his respect for the Filipinos who played their hearts out. But Jacobs refused to
take credit for the boys' outstanding performance. "Players win games and coaches lose them,"
he has always said. And this time, referring to the Jones Cup victory, Jacobs said the boys
did it on their own. "We were lucky," he added, downplaying the mastery with which the American
mentor Gene Keady was outwitted from the bench.
