This could well be said of Gimlets team guard Alex Martinez Clariño who is mistakenly labeled The Enforcer, on account perhaps of his somewhat burly looks big, tough-looking and muscled. But this is a false impression, according to Alex himself. Actually, he is "meek as a lamb," he says. Alex is a Manileño, having been born in Sampaloc, Manila, on August 26, 1958 (advanced Happy Birthday Greetings to you!) to Anacleto Clariño of Tiwi, Albay and Corazon Martinez of Atimonan. The third of six children, he attended his grade school at the San Sebastian College on Claro M. Recto Street and his elementary at Dr. Alejandro Elementary School. When the family moved to Atimonan, he spent his high school years at the Leon Guinto Memorial College where he played as a Junior player for two years, although actually he started playing the game as early as age 16 in any available. courtyard. Back to Manila, he took up his college course at the Lyceum, Intramuros, graduating in Foreign Service in 1978, where he also played in the intramurals for four years. At the same time, he played for the Sunrise Team (Milmore) where he attained his highest career points of 58 against vs Yanmar team. Sunrise at that time was coached by Boy Arazas with Jun Celis assisting. He also played for the Crispa amateur team under coach Ciso Bernardo. For the period 1976 to 1980, Alex was selected among many hopefuls to represent the National Team under coach Honesto Mayoralgo in Kuwait, with the ABC in Pesta Sukan, Malaysia and Singapore. With him and who are now with the PBA were Tony Dasalla, Etok Lobo, Tibo Watson, Benjie Poblete, Jimmy Manansala, Fritz Gaston and Joy Carpio. He particularly remembers that championship game they played with Malaysia in Singapore where they were mauled by the partisan crowd. Alex also saw action in the Southeast Asian Games held in Jakarta under Coach Nat Canson, in the ABC, held in Japan with Coach Freddie Webb and the World. Youth and Asian Games held in Manila and Bangkok under Coach Nic Jorge. He can be considered a veteran player of no mean calibre as he has participated in sixteen championship games, six with the famed APCOR team, seven with Sunrise, one each with the 'RP Team in Pesta Sukan, SEA and RP Youth in Kuwait. That's experience and honing for you. His first taste of the play-for-pay professional basketball was with Gilbey's Gin in 1981, signing up a contract up to 1985, playing as a guard. He has certainly improved a lot, surprisingly averaging 12 points with many assists per game. Burly as he is, he is often assigned to guard the ace players which he considers exacting, difficult, but at the same time a sign of recognition. For him the best coaches are Turing Valenzona and Jun Celis. For him, too, there is no other. team but Gilbey's Gin Gimlets as far the management is concerned. It's super, according to Alex. Boss Honeyboy Palanca and Manager Adolf Ferrer are tops in relating to the boys, very approachable and understanding.
