UNIVERSITY of Santos Tomas head mentor Januario "Aric" del Rosario refers to his ace playmaker Dale Singson as the Growling Tigers" "second coach". And why not? Singson, who was instrumental in helping the Españabased quintet capture the third and fourth UAAP cage crown in the 1996 and 1997 season, has been doing the role he is assigned to by del Rosarioorchestrating Santo Tomas' plays. "Si Dale eh mahalaga talaga sa team. lyung experience niya eh malaking bagay sa team at magaling pa siyang dumiskarte sa loob (ng court" del Rosario once said of his prized point guard whom he recruited in 1994 Since top-rate playmaker Bal David's departure from the Tigers' roster, Singson has ably assumed the role of a leader for his team. And the 5'11" Santo Tomas guard responded quite well as he is best remembered during the UST-La Salle championship tussle for the 1996 UAAP season championship. With the precious time ticking away, Singson drove past a La Salle defender, sinking a baseline jumper that enabled the Tigers to snatch the victory from the Green Archers, and thus achieving the Triple Crown. However, Singson wouldn't have been able to reach his current status if not for the rigid personal training he observes. Aside from jogging inside the University's vast football field, Singson also pours time in lifting weights and doing calisthenics. "Madalas akong mag-weights, at usually ginagawa ko, iyon sa Makati Coliseum. Atnagja-jogging din ako sa field sa school,, kaṣama iyung mga teammates ko, lalo na kapag malapit na ang UAAP," explained Singson, who also plays for Wilkins Distilled Water in the Philippine Basketball League. But he also makes sure that he takes Enervon C everyday in order to complement his physical exercises. Singson is currently a member of the Enervon C Power Team along with other prominent UAAP figures of the league like Most Valuable Player Mark Clemence Telan of La Salle, and National University's Danilo Ildefonso, who now plays for San Miguel in the PBA. Singson is one of 12 UAAP players who were not only cited for their basketball excellence but also for their sterling leadership and personal qualities, athletes who typify what Enervon C is all about dedicated, disciplined and push themselves to the limit in pursuit of excellence. "Proud ako sa pagiging member ng Enervon C Power Team. Parang nagse-serve na model na rin kasi ako para sa UST at sa UAAP, at nakakadagdag pa ng kumpyansa," he added. Endurance is one important factor that he gets from Enervon C, thus enabling him to cope up with the rigorous training he undergoes daily. "Mas may endurance ako sa paggamit ng Enervon C, dahil kailangan sa game ang stamina so at least mas nasa kondisyon ako," said Singson. Still young at the age 22, Singson has the making of a legitimate basketball star so it won't be surprising if he becomes one the best point guards in the country someday.
