PBA Opening 1980
1. PBA Opening 1980

Opening before one of the biggest crowds ever to attend an inaugural offering of the PBA, the pro league reeled off its 1980 First Conference Sunday at Araneta Coliseum Coliseum with two slambang games that gave the spectators their money's worth: newcomer Tefilin fought revved- up Honda up to the last seconds before succumbing, 94 to 95. Toyota led Crispa most of the way in the final half but never was out of danger of being overhauled until last quarter heroics of Andy Fields, Danny Florencio and Mr. Reliable himself, Sonny Jaworski, among whose scintillating plays were three 3-point long toms; Toyota won, 112-107.

The parade of athletes was star-studded, but the other teams who had muses who weren't screen personalities had nothing to kowtow about: their muses were just as pretty if not more so. On hand for cinemaland were that tiny bundle of body and beauty, Vilma Santos, sexpot Alma Moreno and stunning Charo Santos. As was former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz though the latter arrived too late to join the parade; may shooting kasi ako, she explained to photographers.

Doming Itchon of Tanduay, who took over when Emerson Coseteng resigned the PBA presidency, was reelected for another term and thus had the honor to declare another PBA

Gloria Diaz, Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa star, arrived too late to act as Galleon Shippers' muse, but it probably was just as well, or she might stirred up a riot at ringside with her low, low decolletage that had eyes poppin'. Gloria sat out the day's sked between sportscasters Dick Ildefonso and Emy Arcilla, and the two must have had an ordeal trying not to stare! No question about it, a dozen years after winning the Miss Universe title, Miss Diaz is as luscious and delectable as ever!
