It was a touching, if very dignified and formal PBA opening ceremonies. It was short and sweet too. The crowd, apparently starved for hard-driving basketball action for several months now, thronged at the Astrodome like ants seduced by sweet, sticky icing on a birthday cake. How far the PBA has gone and what it has accomplished was obvious in the line of distinguished guests who attended the afternoon affair. The presence of Senator Nikki Coseteng, who represented her fa- ther, the late Emerson Coseteng (who forged the league along with seven others. in 1975) was a dramatic gesture that emo- tionally affected those who were there. Ms. Coseteng herself, if it will be remembered, was active PBA stuff when she sat on the Galerie Dominique bench as first lady manager of the league. Vice President Joseph Estrada who used to be a regular PBA watcher himself as mayor of San Juan (with matching wrist- band and all) had a homecoming of sorts.. But this time his name was chanted. Cheers. and applause deafened him and the chant- ers themselves. It must have felt good to be told he was the crowd's hero for all seasons. The number of lovely, luscious muses. and celebrities in the crowd was dazzling. Even staggering. The show's numbers were very classily rendered and tastefully done. The real stars of the show--league officials past and present, as well as the eight PBA teams were a sight to see. All promised first-rate action and peerless, excellent sports entertainment.
