SAVE FOR SEVERAL ANXIOUS moments midway in the contest, Shell Rimula X appeared totally in control of the opening game that pitted the Turbo Charg ors against crowd favorite Ginebra San Miguel. Shell had won handily, 100-88, It was a grand debut for Chito Narvasa who emerged a winner on his first time at bat as head coach in the pro league. Still, he wasn't that happy. He did not like the way his players lapsed into mediocrity and forgot all about team concept during that slip that saw Shell lose a 13-point spread and allow Ginebra to surge on top. "At this point, our focus is not really on winning. We're trying to develop a system. That's where the players should concentrate. There were lapses and those who did so had to be pulled out," said Narvasa, son of the Supreme Court Chief Justice. Shell had two scoring bursts in the contest. An initial 15-2 run gave the Turbo Chargers a 42-29 lead going into the last three minutes of the second quarter. But Noli Locsir. strung up eight straight points in a 10-2 tear by Ginebra as the Gins closed in, 44-39 at halftime. Ginebra continued its rampage this time with Bobby Jose pumping in 12 points in a 21-10 blast that gave the Gins the upperhand at 60-54. That was the last gallant stand of the Gins. And then came Shell's second burst, a critical one which assured the Turbo Chargers of the win. Benjie Paras tossed in nine points while sophomore Cris Bade and Alberto Guidaben added four apiece in a 22-2 salvo that shoved the Turbo Chargers ahead for good, 76-62. Of course, Narvasa was pleased with the way his veterans responded. They had bailed him out of trouble. Along with Jaworski, the other recipients of the plaques of appreciation and recognition were Shell's Guidaben, retired cager Ramon Fernandez and PBA employees Linda Vergara and Ruben Briones. Only one game was played on opening day as the first half of festivities was devoted to an extravaganza billed as 'Total Entertainment' which featured Vina Morales and Gary Valenciano.
