Marlowe Jacutin. No. 5 of San Miguel. A University of Visayas standout. He had played for varied commercial teams in Cebu in the past, we also heard. And wasn't he also that one linked to a game-fixing thing who was later subsequently cleared? Together with three other Cebuano players? Anyway, there he was, jumping up high, his long arm up-stretched straight (long arms those!) and repeating that vertical jump once or twice before finally hooking his arm around the ball, to the consternation of his opponents, some three of them simultaneously jumping in that scramble near the goal. And then, with arm hooked around that leather, he brought it down. He won the rebound! He passed to someone, one of the smaller guards of the squad. Later, he was jumping from the sides, shooting sweetly. Score upped by a couple. Another instance had him harrassing his man flailing with those long arms who looked irritated. There was yet one time when he tipped in a miss by one of his teammates (was it Velasco missing or Tuadles?) and then another time when he followed up another attempt by a colleague which thunked the rim. That follow-up gave them another twinner.

The 6' 160 lbs hoopster from Cebu (Cagayan de Oro to be exact although he studies in Cebu at the University of Visayas) is alert, highjumping, and in later games, blocked or made it difficult for his quarry to make good the latter's attempt. When San Miguel played against Seven-Up last January 25, we were slightly convinced of what his friends from Cebu had been telling us: "Jacutin is really a good player ... he is playing better here in Manila than in Cebu. But he was quite a sensation in Cebu, especially in 1974-75..." Facts: Marlowe Jacutin was some sort of "MVP" for that inter-colle giate tussle held in Baguio some time in the past. For the years 1975'76, when the University of Visayas Green Lancers torpedoed he opposi tion and ran away with those prized plums in the Inter-Collegiate. In 1974-75, this same quintet was runner-up in the inter-collegiate; in 1973-74, this same aggregation, showing their hard-court mettle in Cebu, proved that they can be toprated hoopsters. Two-times champion and although credit should also go to the other dribblers who composed the UV five, it still is a cinch to stress that Marlowe Jacutin contributed, in no small measure, to the feats. From Arnulfo Tuadles, a member of a national quintet, this assessment: "Magaling 'yan..."
