Remembering NCC Days - Arthur 'Chip' Engelland
1. Remembering NCC Days - Arthur 'Chip' Engelland
Amateur basketball critics were skeptical when during last year's preparation for the Hongkong ABC,
Arthur 'Chip' Englelland suddenly showed up in the RP Training camp. "What can an American
standing 6-1 do that a taller Filipino cager can't do?" was the question. It turned out that
Chip Engelland wasn't just an ordinary 6-1 cager. Ron Jacobs, coach of the national team,
had his reasons. And basketball fans soon found out what Engelland's real worth was.To-date,
Engelland has rightfully won the manicker "Machinegun Chip." It's obvious, a guy who scores 30
or more points per game is like a gun that spews fire relentlessly. Asked to describe Chip Engelland,
Ron Jacobs said, "He's a good player. It's obvious we needed a good shooter and that's why we got him.
We're looking for somebody with the right attitude. He's well-disciplined. He's a good human being.
That's very important." Chip impressed Ron Jacobs while playing for the Palisades High School in California.
But it wasn't until lately that he was contacted by the NCC coach to drop by Manila and join Northcon.
Chip spent three years with Palisades then took up history at Duke University in North Carolina where
he also dribbled for four years.
