JB Yango Revisited
They don't produce players like Jose Bernardo "JB" Yango anymore.
Or if they do, they only come once in a while. JB belongs to a rare breed
of cagers, a refreshing group, one which has maintained level-headedness
despite continuous success in the game. As amateur hoopla's top center-forward,
he can afford to throw his weight around, off and on the court, like the
so many basketeers flooding the coliseum, But not JB. Not the 6-3 pivot load
of the Yco Painters. The classic rise of JB from a gangling junior player of
NCBA in the little known MUCAA tournament to a powerful shaded lane expert
of the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA will always serve as an Inspiration to
aspiring cagers. And consider the number of highs in JB's caging since he
joined amateur's big league; he was voted MICAA top rookie in 1979, where he
also made it to the league's mythical selection; he was in the 1979 national
youth team which took part in the World Youth Basketball Championships in Brazil;
he was again named to the 1979 men's national team which represented the country
in the ABC and SEA Games. This year, he is considered a strong favorite for the national team.
