Pinoy Coach Legend Tribute - Perry Ronquillo

1.

Well, now at least we know he's just a damn good coach...and not a magician. This Pick & Roller is talking about Shell Velocity head tactician Perry Ronquillo who has earned the nod of the regular PBA beat writers as Coach of the Year the past two seasons. In fact, he's just a year away from keeping the Baby Dalupan Trophy for himself. But as good as the guy is, it's the players who are on the floor making things happen. And this year, it seems he just doesn't have enough players to get the job done. About this time of the year last year, Shell Velocity and Perry Ronquillo were making heads turn in the PBA All-Filipino Cup. The Zoom Masters were not really expected to I do well, but they were then fast turning out to be the surprise of the season. I myself didn't think Shell, with it's lineup, could go far. In the team profile I wrote in Hardcourt, the PBA Annual, I even said that with its Filipino roster, Shell might just as well kiss the All-Filipino goodbye. And you know what happened. These guys went on to win the All-Filipino crown. The All-Filipino conquest was the continuation of a surprising run that dated back to the 1998 Governors Cup when Ronquillo won his first title and made his Zoom Masters the overachieving bunch of the year.
