PATRICK AQUINO
When the Fighting Maroons of UP lost slotman Edward Junio, who contracted hepatitis, Patrick Aquino took over the cudgels and emerged as his team's leading performer eventually ranking fifth in the race for MVP honors. However, all his efforts were not enough to be noticed by any team from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL). The 6-1 Aquino, one of 84 players who applied in the PBL, is now a free agent. He could have been assured of a slot at A & W Hamburgers had the Pioneers not disbanded, though. "Maybe, I'll make it to the PBL next 'year," said Patrick who is on his fourth season with the Maroons. "Besides, this will give me ample time to finish my studies first before really concentrating on basketball." Patrick, a fourth year Tourism student, was born on May 30, 1971 and is the eldest of two kids of MWSS employee Placido Aquino and UP employee Vilma Palacios. Younger sister Vivian is with the Filipiniana dancers. Patrick spent two years with the UP junior team before moving up immediately to the seniors squad after impressing coach Rey Madrio. He idolizes San Miguel's Samboy Lim but he is hardly a high-leaper. However, teammates and UAAP watchers describe him as having one quick step good enough to leave his man behind. A good one-on-one player, Patrick says he has to polish his defense if he is to hit it big in commercial leagues. In improving his defense, it follows that he must put on more pounds to his lean 170-lb frame. Of UP's sorry performance in the UAAP where it only has four wins in ten outings, Patrick says, "We have seven rookies on the team. You can't expect to put on a really big show. We can try, but that's just the best thing we can do. We hope to do better next year." UP will only lose two players to graduation and these are Lino Ong and skipper Dolreich Perasol.
