Remembering NCC Days - Anthony Mendoza
1. Remembering NCC Days - Anthony Mendoza
RP Youth Five's Pillar of Strength
Anthony Mendoza hit Manila by storm when he played for Crispa Walk Tall Jeans
in the MICAA in 1981. The gritty Mendoza showed foreboding shades of Mon Fernandez.
His tenacity off the boards made him a by-word among regular Rizal Memorial
hardcourt patrons. Crispa was coached by Narciso Bernardo. In 1982, after the
MICAA fold-up, Anthony played for Crispa's sister team, Paul Jordan in the
Interclub. Paul Jordan, mentored by Nat Canson, bagged the Interclub title
as it posted a 2-1 record in its best-of-three showdown with Express Truckers.
Mendoza made it to the Sportswriters' Mythical selection. Anthony is the youngest
of two boys born to Bernardo Mendoza and the former Susana Manzano. His elder brother,
Timothy stands 5'10". "My mom is tall. She's 5'7". She's a dentist in Cebu.
My dad is a former Pepsi salesman. He went to the States, Pennsylvania at
nag-apply ng veterans. After twenty-eight months, naging American citizen na siya.
He's holding an American passport. Hindi pa nga lang niya nakukuha ang green card niya,
Pinepetisyon na nga kami ngayon. Kaya lang ayaw ko pa dahil sa basketball,"
claims the 6'3" slotman.
